How To Build a Skincare Routine
Identifying your skin type is the most essential step before you build your skincare routine because your skin type will determine the products you need for your core skincare routine such as cleanser, toner, moisturiser, exfoliator and sunscreen.
Once you determine your skin type, the next step is to find out what skin concerns you have, which can vary from one to a combination of problems such as acne scars, acne, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines, open pores, blackheads etc. Understanding your skin concern will help you determine what key ingredients/treatment products you may need to use to address these concerns.
Creating a balance of products you need for your skin type and the additional products you may need to address your skin concerns will help you to create the best skincare routine for you.
A good place to start is to simplify your skincare regime, work your core basics right and work your way to building a three, five or a ten step routine. While it’s tempting to try everything all at once, it becomes difficult to identify which product maybe causing you breakouts or irritating your skin. So get your basic foundation right i.e. Cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen for your skin and then you can add serums, toners and all the other steps one at a time. Why we emphasise on adding one product at a time is because this will help you find out which products or ingredients may be triggering your irritation.
Pick a cleanser with a low pH 4.5-5.5 that effectively cleanses your skin without stripping the skin of its natural oils.
Most people with oily skin prefer strong cleansing products that will keep their clean squeaky clean but that really make things worse. Using harsh cleansers and products that are high on pH scale can cause imbalance in the skin’s pH.
A good cleanser is one that doesn’t leave your skin dry, greasy or tight.
Whether you have oily, dry, sensitive skin, there is a moisturizer for all skin types. Remember the best moisturizer is the one that suits you the best.
Try to look for the following textures if you have
Oily skin/Combination skin: lightweight serums or thin, matte finish lotion and gel based moisturizers.
Dry skin: Rich emollient creams.
Normal skin: Soft, light weight moisturisers /lotions
Make sunscreen your best friend. Find a sunscreen that suits you the best and apply it religiously day in and day out, be it a cloudy day or a rainy day, 365 days a year.
Sun damage is the number one cause of age spots, wrinkles, premature aging,skin-cancer.Using a broad spectrum sunscreen that offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays is critically important if your goal is to have healthy, young-looking skin as long as possible.
WHY YOU SHOULD STICK TO A ROUTINE:
One of the most important components to having a good healthy skin is to have a routine and to stick to it.To persevere even when you don’t feel like it.We are all guilty of sometimes going to bed without proper cleansing or taking off Mascara after a long day at work. If you look at your beauty regimen not as a challenge but as merely part of your daily routine, like brushing your teeth or taking a shower, it becomes so much easier to stick to it. So make sure to double cleanse and apply a good moisturiser before going to sleep.Your routine should be so deeply ingrained that you just do it no matter what.
Remember a healthy Glowing skin does take time and dedication and the older you get, the more disciplined you have to be.
